The staging includes stunning projections, which immerse the audience in sound, motion picture, photography, and graphic design.

UBC Wind Conducting Symposium is available to band conductors of all levels. Participants refresh their conducting skills and learn about band repertoire, score study, and rehearsal techniques under the guidance of UBC Director of Bands Robert Taylor and distinguished guest artist Craig Kirchhoff (University of Minnesota). Participants will work with a live ensemble comprised of UBC Symphonic Wind Ensemble students and attend professional development sessions, including a special webinar with this year’s featured composer, Dana Wilson.

Arkora: Transfigured Light
Transfigured Light is a concert of vocal chamber music exploring themes of death, light, and rebirth. Taking place at twilight, Transfigured Light features microtonal vocal music of the past and present, including world premieres by Dorothy Chang, Brendon Randall-Myers, and Benton Roark (MMus'07, DMA'13) plus late Renaissance motets by Vicentino, Lassus, and Victoria. The concert will feature the Lumiphone, a 31-note-per-octave, eight-foot glass marimba. The program culminates with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang's Death Speaks, a five-part, haunting meditation on the transient nature of existence for soprano, electric guitar, piano, and violin, featuring Arkora co-director Kathleen Allan (BMus‘11) in the soloist role.

Jean Coulthard Readings — Call for Scores
The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra is pleased to present the Jean Coulthard Readings during the 2017/18 Symphony Season. Named in honour of one of BC’s most beloved composers, the Jean Coulthard Readings give emerging BC composers an invaluable opportunity to have their work read by a professional orchestra. Approximately six orchestral works will be selected, depending on duration and level of difficulty. Participating composers will receive a part preparation seminar with VSO Music Librarians and a follow-up masterclass with the Vancouver Symphony’s Composer-in-Residence, Jocelyn Morlock (MMus'96, DMA'02).

UBC Music faculty member Stephen Chatman was nominated for Classical Composition of the Year for Choir Practice, A Comic Opera in One Act.

Standing Wave was nominated for Classical Ensemble of the Year. The ensemble includes UBC Music faculty members Vern Griffiths and Christie Reside, as well as UBC Music alumni Allen Stiles (BMus'84, MMus'86) and AK Coope.
