How to apply
Applicants to UBC School of Music graduate degree programs must successfully meet the admission requirements of both UBC’s Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies (G+PS) and the School of Music.
Step One: Apply online
Deadline for September 2020 intake: Dec. 1, 2019.
Late applicants, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
To apply to UBC School of Music's graduate programs, you must apply to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. Complete the online application form while also making sure to check out the additional audition and application requirements for the program you're applying to.
Step Two: Double-check the specific application requirements for your program
Music graduate degrees have detailed application and audition requirements. A degree-by-degree breakdown is available here.
Step Three: Audition
In-person auditions are scheduled for January 12 & 13, 2019. Due to potential changes in faculty scheduling, do NOT make long-distance travel plans before receiving a confirmed, individual audition date and time from UBC Music.
If you're applying to a Performance program, you must audition as part of your application. In-person auditions are strongly encouraged, and provide you with an opportunity to meet with School of Music faculty. Video auditions are possible if travel to UBC presents a hardship. Conducting applicants please note: auditions and/or interviews will take place on various dates by invitation only.
1. In-Person Audition: Expected dates January 12 & 13, 2019.
In-person auditions are 20-30 minutes long. Auditions will be scheduled after the application deadline by the Graduate Admissions Secretary. The School of Music supplies a pianist for vocalists only. Any instrumentalist or vocalist may bring their own pianist or hire a School of Music pianist.
2. Video Audition: Due January 3, 2019
You may submit high-quality video recordings of your audition selections, preferably recorded by a professional technician. The recording of each individual selection (piece, multi-movement work, or song) must be an unedited performance that has been recorded within the past 6 months. Each recorded selection must not be edited or manipulated in any way, and you must submit a statement certifying the integrity of each recording. Instructions on how to upload a video audition will be provided by email to video audition applicants after the application deadline.
Step Four: Apply for funding
Deadline: Varies by scholarship or award
There are a number of scholarships and awards available for incoming graduate students.
Select scholarships and awards:
Canadian Scholarship Programs for Non-Canadians wishing to study/conduct research in Canada
